GWEN GORDON

Master Tailor / Seamstress / Instructor

I started sewing at the age of 5 years old. My mother made clothes for my Barbie dolls out of scraps from the garments she made. Due to my dislike of her designs, I drew pictures to provide vivid examples of the dresses I wanted. She politely explained to me that I would have to make them myself.

I completed a Master Tailoring course at the age of 12 and was listed in the book, “Who’s Who Among Students in Vocational Schools” in 1976.

In High School I made prom and homecoming dresses for many students and even rented some of the dresses that I had made for myself. Students brought me photos from magazines or they described an idea of a dress they had in mind, I then sketched the design and created the garment from the sketch.

My professional career began as a tailor at Redwood and Ross in Birmingham, Michigan. After a few years, I continued my tailoring career at Hudson’s department store where I quickly advanced to a management position.

My management successes of alterations rooms at Hudson’s include, Summit Place Mall and Twelve Oaks Mall. Due to my performance, I was chosen to be part of the management team to open the flagship store, Somerset Hudson’s.

I have taught sewing classes at Sew Quik in Royal Oak (now closed) and JoAnn Fabrics in Bloomfield Hills while working part time for the Viking Sewing Machine Co. This, along with teaching Hudson’s employees various techniques, which they may have been unaware. I have also taught sewing classes at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills, Michigan. I’m also very fortunate to be able to add, that I’ve created award winning fiber art.

Sewing and designing are my life passion and I find it very exciting to teach others how rewarding and fun sewing can be.

The possibilities are endless.
